ETHICS FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Published in 1999 by The Berkley Publishing Group, NY,NY. ISBN 1-57322-025-6 retail price $15 softcover.
Why did I choose to read this book? I needed credits and I needed 6 of them in the category of ethics. Over the years I had studied the Ethics of Business, the Ethics of Massage and many other courses and this time I wanted to read a book that enhanced my life – yes it truly was a learning experience.
The Dalai Lama is not a religious person he is a spir-itual leader. Although his background and teachings are Buddhism he does not preach or try to convince you that any particular religion is the one that you should follow.
At the core of his belief is a common thread among all people – each human being desires to be happy and to avoid suffering. It?s a very simple philosophy and the Dalai Lama very patiently and in great detail gives us a path. He states that the main characteristic of true happiness is compassion. Compassion makes our lives meaningful and leads to infinite joy. He appeals to us to act out of concern for others. treat all others as you would a friend. Do not turn away from someone if there is something you can do, also do not look down on anyone. Quote ” You will all look the same in your grave”.
I would recommend reading this book – to learn from it – to meditate upon the teachings – read it a second and third time to increase your compassion and decrease your stress.
