RAI was formed by a group of Reflexology practitioners after legislation was introduced into the Illinois General Assembly in 1999.? This proposed legislation for the licensure of Massage Therapist would have greatly restricted or disenfranchised practicing Reflexologists.
The need for a strong central organization within the State of Illinois to express the concerns and interest of Reflexology as a profession was apparent.? RAI was formed and incorporated to fill this need.
RAI works across the country with other Reflexology organizations.? Our purpose is to educate the public and to define ourselves among other health care modalities.? As public awareness of complementary health care options grows, Reflexology and Reflexologists deserve to be one of the prime options the public can come to rely on.

Cancer is a dreaded word which alarms us all, especially if you have it. My disease, a non-Hodgkins lymphoma, was diagnosed three years ago through various radiological procedures, biopsies, and major surgery. After three months of waiting, the long-awaited chemotherapy began, five devastating drugs administered orally and intravenously over eights hours every three weeks. Within five days I was overwhelmed with total body sickness such as I had never experienced before. In search of help other than anti-nausea drugs and analgesics, my wife suggested I begin trying complementary medicine to curb symptoms. The most effective of these treatments was reflexology administered by a competent therapist in my home. She was reassuring as she probed my feet and told me about the various areas of the feet that relate to the body. And to my amazement, my condition improved, over and above all the medications I was taking to overcome symptoms. I continued reflexology for almost one year before my therapist felt secure enough to dismiss me from her practice.
Being a physician trained in the scientific method, I was as skeptical as most of my colleagues, that complementary techniques are only placebos at best. Through recent radiologic advances, however, integrative medicine procedures have actually shown the brain to be functioning during therapy, revealing electrical activity very similar to experiments performed with placebos. What good news! Our mind-body connections really are reactive and receptive in ways that may heal differently than mainline medicine. Why not use them to ?complement? the advances made in cancer treatments that provide us with improved quality of life and cures?
During my illness my reflexologist and other practitioners proved knowledgeable and sympathetic, and applied their skills with gentleness and professionalism on a weekly basis, ameliorating my symptoms and anxiety. As my oncologist continued therapy through month three and four, the expected slow weight loss and diminished energy along with the usual nausea would have been totally debilitating without the integrative procedures that I chose. By now I was also being treated by a physician in the cancer center who specialized in integrative medicine. She confirmed my decisions regarding treatment, added glimmers of hope, and widened my vision to other therapies which relieved symptoms from chemotherapy. I discovered a more positive attitude and creativity that expanded my mental resources in writing, music, and engendered a greater appreciation for fellow sufferers. I was transformed from a suspicious patient into a believer of complementary medicine! My reflexologist was integral in maintaining this affirming activity to the end and beyond chemotherapy.
Although treatment with integrative medicine is difficult to document statistically, efforts through the National Institutes of Health are underway to investigate various aspects of therapy. With long-term controlled studies, more will be learned about the value of these techniques as they are applied in juxtaposition to standard medical procedures and pharmacotherapy. The future is bright for the professions that comprise complementary medicine and for the patients who receive the benefits of compassionate care from the practitioners of the art.

Revealing memories and beliefs that get in the way of good health!
Although Kinesiology, known also as the ?science of motion?, has been around for a very long time, there has been much more awareness of this highly effective technique since its reintroduction in the 1950?s. It is has been developed into what it is today by acupuncturists, neurobiologists, homeopaths as well as other natural health specialists. As with most healing modalities, there are many different approaches and beliefs, all of which are valid when it comes to getting the body to move as it should.? Applied Kinesiology, known also as Touch for Health, is one of the variations that is used to effectively balance the body?s energy and empower the individual. This, in turn, promotes well-being and ensures on-going good health. ?Balancing? is an essential aspect of healing and health, which is why it is such an essential aspect of every healing technique, along with a change of life style. Fortunately the body has the remarkable ability to automatically maintain its chemical balance through breathing, eating and elimination, all of which involve the alternation of movements between activity and relaxation, another example being the extremes of wakefulness and sleep. With humans being so complex they do need to find balance on all levels because should any one part become seriously out of sync, it can adversely affect other parts, which instinctively take it upon themselves to compensate as much as possible. The ?biofeedback?, from muscle testing, helps unlock the mysteries of the body by accurately assessing the state of the muscles, since they are constantly monitoring what is going on and adjusting according to the balance and imbalance, relaxation and stress, harmony and disharmony, as they move. Muscles are also very aware of the flow of chi and immediately pick up any resistance. This generally relates to a perceived inadequacy or lack in the past, often showing up as some form of nutritional deficiency.? Any type of distress weakens the associated muscles, with the despair invariably coming from a horrific memory or an unreasonable belief. Muscle testing not only draws attention these discomforts but also makes it possible to look beyond the symptom or label of dis-ease and identify the memory or belief that is presenting a ?problem?. This offers the ideal opportunity to get better at being oneself.
SO WHAT IS BAREFOOT KINESIOLOGY?
Barefoot Kinesiology takes Applied Kinesiology a step further for even greater understanding of what?s a-foot, emotionally and spiritually! It does this by providing fascinating insight into why the body moves as it does. It highlights reasons why it experiences difficulty in moving, from time to time, or why it?s not moving at all, since the cause is deep set beliefs that generally stem from horrific memories or terrifying, yet convincing, hearsay. Looking at the feet assists in understanding how anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, exercise, physiology? and philosophy, are all influenced by the state of the mind, which, in turn, determines the tone, elasticity and strength of the muscles. This then gives an indication as to what is going on at a much deeper level. Kinesiology tests muscular strength in response to specific ?questions? to reveal the degree of resilience that is linked to beliefs in oneself and others. Barefoot Kinesiology helps in understanding deep-set issues that are no longer be tolerated, which are generally highlighted through allergies to certain foods, specific animals, particular insects, various everyday substances and other irritants, including people. Adverse reactions are, in themselves, insightful. Although eliminating the foods or taking antidotes are helpful options, it is even more effective to get to the root cause of the issue. This is where the feet and barefoot kinesiology step in.
MAKING THE BODY SICK!
Emotions and thoughts have an incredible effect on the body?s energy; more so than people and things in the environment. Blaming the external world has become the easiest way of dealing with the hurt, shame, guilt and so on because anything that is seen, heard, felt, smelt or even tasted is more tangible to most than sickening thoughts and upset emotions. Yet it is so disempowering to point fingers and makes finding a solution very challenging and, sometimes, impossible. Deep down, everybody knows how any form of mental, emotional or physical distress weakens the body, and can, in time, make one sick. The resultant symptoms of distress convey a profound and often heart-wrenching story; usually a drama of something that went seriously wrong, or of something that was considered to be really bad, extremely hurtful or horrifically distressing.? Any form of grievance, conscious or sub-conscious, weakens the body, upsets the chemical balance and limits physical capabilities, to the extent that, in extreme situations, they can bring mind, body and soul to a virtual standstill. Symptoms are, therefore, the key to piecing together the drama. They externally mirror the panic and fear that is going on within. These generally date back to previous generations, often being the remnants of parental and ancestral beliefs, as well as the leftovers from their sometimes frightful experiences. This is not to blame but to understand that everybody chooses the ideal family so that they can ?work through? their own ?stuff? and, in so doing, wipe the slate clean for the whole family. In so doing, it relieves generations of the burdens and ?mis-takes? that have tormented them for eons.? Barefoot Kinesiology helps in decipher all that is going on so that something worthwhile can be done to make the necessary improvements.
GETTING ON THE NERVES
The body?s innate intelligence ensures that it constantly breathes, without being reminded, and that its heart adjusts its beats when needed, without being told to. It is well aware of what strengthens it and weakens it, an intelligence that is tapped into when muscle testing. Negative thoughts, beliefs, emotions or memories immediately de-motivate and challenge it, whilst a loving input inspires and supports it. All forms of movement, mentally, emotionally and physically, affect the many pathways of energy, which, in turn, determine the type of behaviour, according to ingrained beliefs, as well as prior experiences. Although the body does have an incredible capacity to self-regulate and self-heal, it does rely on its nervous system to assist in doing this, especially since the brain and nerves are constantly aware of what is going on inside and out. Every action and reaction depends on brain recall; if the recall is ?bad? then there is more likely to be a ?bad? reaction; if it is ?good? then a more healthy reaction is likely. Either way the muscles only move on instructions from the brain, which means that any recall that ?gets on the nerves? can upset the balance and cause discomfort. Increased vulnerability weakens the muscles and depletes the body of its energy. So, even when an individual ?short circuits? or ?blows a fuse? the body can compensate, unless the memory is too terrifying or the belief too terrible to deal with. There are, however, those who thrive on negative attention and enjoy being a victim, despite this being a selfish choice. It is far better to acknowledge, understand and then let go of the past, especially the more disturbing memories, so that they no longer interfere with the present. Standing up for oneself makes the individual feel so better about themselves; it strengthens the immune system, enhances the muscles and makes the entire body feel great. It is then so much easier to adapt and cope with the inevitable changes and challenges that life continually presents, every step of the way!
ON THE MOVE
Every movement that the body makes involves many muscles from the eyes that focus, to the ears that listen, to the mouth that speaks, to the neck that turns, to the limbs that change position, to the lungs that breathe, to the heart that beats and so on. The extent to which the body is able to move is either favourably or adversely affected by the mind, which, in turn, functions according to its memories and beliefs. Fearful memories immediately engender anxiety, causing the muscles to tense, limiting the capacity to move; whereas happy memories relax the mind, allowing muscles greater freedom and flexibility. In other words, very set ways of thinking rigidify and frighten the body, whilst an open mind relaxes it and makes it feel at ease. The various muscular movements, or limitations thereof, can be more easily understood in the following ways:
Flexion: ability to bend into other ways of thinking, whilst flexing one?s own mind, but also knowing when to hold back and keep oneself to oneself
Extension: the skill of being able to straighten out awkward situations, as well as? give oneself additional room when needed
Abduction: knowing what to hold onto and claim to be one?s own, yet being aware of what to let go of, mentally, emotionally and spiritually
Adduction: the knack of drawing things to a harmonious space by allowing everybody?s differences to contribute in their own special way
Rotation: willing to ?take turns?, as well as do a complete turnaround when appropriate
internal rotation is affected by being able to do this at home
external rotation is influenced by what is going on elsewhere
Supination: feeling comfortable about the past and knowing what?s going on behind one?s back
Pronation: adept at handling the present even though there was a lot of prior resistance
Plantarflexion: bowing into other ways of thinking, whilst remaining true to one?s own notions, which makes bending the toes downwards and arching the feet possible
Dorsiflexion: knowing when to ?pull back? and ?hold off?, demonstrated by the ease with which the toes and feet flex upwards
Eversion: capable of turning outwards to explore all the amazing possibilities out there
Inversion: able to turning inwards for inner reflection and soul searching
Inverse: being able to reverse roles and yet maintain one?s usual stance in life, especially after being turned inside out
Elevation: capable of reaching great heights, rise above the mundane, raise one?s standards and constantly get better at being oneself
Depression: turning ?negatives? into ?positives? and using the dark times of being ?put down? to find the inner strength to keep moving ahead
Protraction: knowing how to make the moment last by fully appreciating every situation
Retraction: taking stock and pulling back for as long as it takes to assess the next move
Every fibre in the body is affected by the ?stuff? one is made. The muscles, in particular, pick up on all this, and this, in turn, determines their tone, elasticity and capacity to perform, particularly when ?put to the test?. In other words, each muscle?s characteristics depend on:
- strength of character
- amount of backbone
- the ?guts? to deal with challenges
- willingness to be innovative and take risks, regardless of the odds
- degree of resourcefulness
- capacity to deal with the rougher aspects of life
- integrity and intent
- fortitude and determination to get through no matter what
- whether give in too easy or stand one?s ground
- knack of spinning a yarn in outrageous situations and getting away with it
- eagerness to extend a helping hand
JOINING THE PARTS TOGETHER
Moving around is facilitated by the many joints that link various related parts, which also makes it possible to change direction, whenever needed. The ease and flexibility with which this is done depends on ?what?s on and in the mind? at the time. For instance, very set ways of thinking, which dictate that things must be done in particular ways, leave little or no room for manoeuvre, as do stubbornness, a reluctance to give in, along with excessive pride and obstinacy. These mind sets are a sign of extreme insecurity, with some possible reasons being:
- needing to ?dig one?s heels in?
- fear of being tripped up
- frightened of being caught off guard
- an exceptionally strict upbringing
- never being able to ?get away with anything?
- finding it impossible to please anybody
- constantly having had ?one?s own way?
- not being able to ?get a-head? as one would wish
Any form of mental resistance, be it anxiety, concern, worry or fear, causes the body to stiffen. As the muscles ?pull back? the joints are likely to ?lock?, especially when ?making a stand?. This invariably makes any further movement difficult. Muscles and joints thrive on adventure! They enjoy taking risks and love being tested and extending themselves to see how far they can go. In so doing, they help the individual come to realise the extent of their magnificence and increase their awareness of what they are capable of doing.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF JOINTS
The many different joints allow the body to move in a variety of ways, keeping it supple and loose. This then means that the mind, body and spirit can expand to explore the known, as well as unknown, with much greater ease.
Synovial joints: affected by memories of similar circumstances in the past, the thought of which either make them dry up and wish to retreat, causing a decrease in the flow of synovial fluid; or over-compensate, increasing the amount of synovial fluid, which then causes them to swell. They function at their best when ?going with the flow? and fully embracing life on every level
Hinge joints: make it possible to ?turn on one?s heels? at a moment?s notice, especially when at a ?tuning point? in life, which calls for taking advantage of the here and now, as well as being aware, as well as making the most, of every opportunity
Pivot joints: being ?in a spin? or ?going around in circles? hinges on these joints, with their capacity to revolve and change directions being affected by consideration of others and ensuring that everybody ?gets? a turn?
Condyloid joints: the rounded eminences, found at the end of some bones, rely on ?rounding off? each chapter in life, without any jagged remarks or conning others to do things ?against the grain?
Saddle joints: function according to the amount of chores one ?saddles? oneself with since being burdened with unnecessary responsibility, or being ?taken for a ride,? get in the way or put strain on these joints
Ball and socket joints: these sphere, orb, globe like joints are universal by nature and are linked to the expansiveness of the cosmos, which is why being shackled by a ball and chain does not suit their liberal ways; to stay fit they need to keep moving powerfully ahead with new ideas and extraordinary concepts, as well as venture into the unknown, no matter who ?sock(s)-it? to them
Gliding joints: the delight of just ?gliding through life? with little or no resistance is helped by these smooth joints which use the past as a firm platform from which to take off and fly
The position of each joint in the body is significant, with their well-being being dependent on the individual?s position in life and how they feel about the circumstances that they are in.
Shoulders: influenced by the ?shoulds? and ?should nots? along with knowing what to shoulder
Elbows: affected by the ability to emotionally adapt and embrace the fullness of all that is offered
Wrists: reveal the ability to handle anything and everything that comes one?s way
Torso: capacity to go with the flow by swaying in the direction required
Knees: encapsulate the need to change and step ahead with confidence
Ankles: show the willingness to venture into virgin territories, especially when it comes to expressing oneself
Unhappiness, feeling out of place or being uncomfortable puts a lot of strain on the joints, which, long term:
- can cause them to swell, indicating a need for more space
- become inflamed because of being infuriated by the lack of flexibility
- dry up from the lack of communication in a specific area
By assessing the predicament the joints are in, it is then possible to work through the situation and find ways to move on from the difficulty or painful situation, putting them in a better space to interact with one another and the rest of the body.
THE BITS IN BETWEEN
Having a ?bit between the teeth? doesn?t help the cartilage of the joints, especially when being obstinate for the sake of it! Cartilage may be tough but it is also highly sensitive about the ?give and take? within relationships! Over time, it influences the amount of elasticity and flexibility between muscles and joints. Although the gristly cartilage is believed to calcify with age, this only happens when very set beliefs forbid unusual movement of the mind, which, in turn, inhibits the body. This generally comes from feeling uncomfortable about having to adjust one?s approach and constantly conform to please others. A huge amount of insecurity exists because of totally unreasonable or completely illogical belief systems that have been forced upon societies throughout the world. This insecurity rigidifies the body and tenses the feet. The only way to break free from these ridiculous restraints is to examine one?s innermost beliefs and dispense with those that keep getting in the way. Then, instead of shelving ideas and leaving them on the ?ledge? to ?age?, it is far more advantageous to be in the ?know? and have the ?know-ledge? to refresh one?s mind and approach to life.
Never before has humanity evolved and moved forward so quickly and dramatically than in the last sixty years, so it is little wonder that some people are feeling dizzy, disoriented, confused and
out of sync with the world around them and, often, discouraged. However, amidst all of this, the most important movement is still the spiritual movement since this opens consciousness and, in so doing, encourages greater flexibility within the body. The muscles work in unison, both moving in opposite directions to provide greater strength and flexibility. Understanding the terms provides insight into what is happening at a deeper level of consciousness:
Agonist: affected when going ballistic, especially when there is a deep need to find out the meaning of something important
Antagonist: influenced by competitive or combative streaks, along with the need to get a reaction by doing something, possibly outrageous
Antagonise: reacts adversely when there?s constant provocation, incessant annoyance, endless irritations, continual suffering; or being riled, alienated or tortured, or always having the back put up
Agonising: excruciating, unbearable, painful, distressing, worrying, heartbreaking memories and beliefs
Self imposed rules, regulations and principles are responsible for getting in the way and inhibiting movement. They are invariably adopted because of fear, insecurity or terror of the consequences, particularly when testing the unknown.
All allergies are emotionally based, with the ultra-sensitivity coming from a deep-set belief or a terrifying memory. Both are capable of altering the chemical content of the body and, therefore, the way in which it acts and reacts. The most commonly known allergies are those to food, people, animals, situations or things, with the brain reacting to each differently, depending on the memory and belief. It doesn?t matter to the brain whether anything is imagined or real since it simply believes everything that is fed to it! It is in this way that everybody creates their own reality according to their perceptions and how they feel about themselves and others. The subsequent consequences then lead to the formation of specific beliefs.? To get to the root of any adverse reaction:
- Find out when the allergy first began
- Determine what was going on emotionally at that time
- Enquire what comes to mind when the irritant is mentioned
- Examine the characteristics of the irritant
- See how these are related to the memory or belief
- Work out what the symptoms are ?saying.
Use the following guidelines to gain further understanding:
Grass is an emotional reaction to the amount of space and opportunity to be oneself, invariably linked to the father
Food is connected to what could and couldn?t be done, or what others did or didn?t do, that was so upsetting that it ?tipped the apple cart; a specific memory or belief that is intolerable or has been tolerated for too long.
Blue foods highlight the need to express oneself
Greens serve as a reminder to love oneself and accept others for who and what they are
Yellow provisions provide insight into what could be done to feel better about what happened, or didn?t happen
Orange fare is linked to the give and take within one?s relationships
Red foodstuffs come from the earth and represent of the basic needs provided by family and society
Animals mirror their owners and many people have animal characteristics in that they can be ?catty?; behave like a ?dog?; being a ?bitch?; eat like a ?pig?; follow others like ?sheep?;? cluck like a ?hen? and so on, so these allergies are using linked to being intolerant or too tolerant of the way in which others act and react
Insects represent those who bug one, or are a pest, or are ?creepy?, or creep up unexpectedly and do what they should not be doing, or say what they should not be saying, usually to get a reaction
Mites highlight the ?mighty? influence of others that ?might? have become a threat and get in the way when it comes to relationships
Dust indicate the ?dust that is swept under the carpet?, especially within families, who still have ?stuff? to deal with but often just keep adding to the pile.
Once the irritating or upsetting belief or memory is identified, it all becomes manageable and the allergy will invariably resolve itself. Bear in mind that ?There are no incurable dis-eases, only incurable belief systems? that can now be ?cured? once you ?see you are?(C-U-RE) what you are. Barefoot kinesiology provides the opportunity to be aware of what has been suppressed, yet is still going on at a much deeper level, and assists in dealing with what needs to be sorted out so that it is natural to live consciously in the present.
REACTIONS TO LOOK OUT FOR
The build-up worldwide of anger, frustration, resentment and criticism is causing an emotional crisis, leading to much physical, mental and spiritual violence and abuse. It is so much easier to ?blame?, others instead of looking within to see ?what went really wrong? in their eyes. Many ignore the hurt, pain, disappointment and so on, yet memories linger until acknowledged and dismissed. Others prefer to take on the role of victim, with the negativity about what was done, or not done, becoming so intense and all-consuming that they lose the plot completely. Seeking revenge only complicates matters and makes things worse. When passionate energy is invested into negative, vengeful thoughts, it tends to cause an over-reaction to everyday situations, particularly if current circumstances serve as a reminder of past hurts, disillusionments, disappointments and sadness. The body draws attention to all this negativity, through specific symptoms, in the hope that the most appropriate steps are taken. Their position in the body provides valuable clues as to what the personal issue really is.

Attention deficiency: highly evolved individual who needs greater and much more extra-ordinary stimulation to be interested
Depression: temporarily in the dark due to feeling desperate, sad, gloomy, miserable, hopeless, dejected
Fear: an illusion created by fearful thoughts that ironically stem from something desperately longed for or terrified of losing at a subconscious level
Headache: aching to get ahead
Negative beliefs: an unenthusiastic, unconstructive, unhelpful, off-putting, disapproving approach to the real meaning of life
Phobia: irrational fear that stems from a dreadful and terrifying experience

DEALING WITH ADVERSITY
Thoughts are energetic creations that define life. It?s the type of thoughts filling the mind that determine reality and subsequent experiences. Negative thoughts, needless to say, bring negativity to the fore; whereas positive thoughts are more likely to attract optimism, clarity and joy. This is why everything in the external world, be it a person, substance, animal or situation, act as mirrors and reminders; providing clues and guidelines into understanding oneself better. Everything is magnetically attracted into one?s life to reflect what is going on at a much deeper level. Any judgement is judgement of oneself; any criticism is critic ism of oneself and so on. Should anything be instrumental in upsetting the status quo in any way, this is because a deeply ingrained memory or belief has been stirred, upsetting mind and body all over again because nothing has been done to improve the situation in the mind. Once dealt with, everybody feels better. This is why the more challenging the circumstances, the greater the opportunity to get better at being oneself. This calls for gratitude towards those who have made life a ?living hell? or ?nightmare? ? these wonderful beings are ?angels in disguise?! Every interaction is an opportunity to make a choice and then to accept the consequences of the decision. The best way to rebalance the body?s energy is to let go of negative opinions and restraining beliefs , replacing them with pure love and genuine appreciation. These are the greatest gifts to give oneself and others; it also brings a little more peace to the world every day.
BENEFITTING FROM BAREFOOT KINESIOLOGY

When her breast cancer returned, spreading to the spine and causing excruciating back pain, Robin Conyers was willing to try almost anything to fight back.
Conyers, 53, of Glenview, agreed to participate in a first-of-its-kind national study that measures the effectiveness of reflexology on advanced breast cancer. The unconventional treatment is used to reduce stress and pain by applying pressure to areas of the foot. “In the beginning, I thought it was someone massaging your feet,” said Conyers, an executive with Kraft Foods Inc. “Who doesn’t love that?”
She now believes reflexology is much more than that, and researchers hope to prove as much during the five-year study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health. Research results won’t be available until 2010, when the data is analyzed.
“It is the first study of its kind in reflexology” to use such rigorous methodology, said David Victorson, research associate at NorthShore University HealthSystem,which has hospitals in Evanston, Glenview, Highland Park and Skokie.
“There are some physicians who still think it’s kind of quackery and voodoo magic and may not be open to the discussion,” he said. “The problem with that is a vast number of patients don’t tell their doctors that they’re doing these things, such as taking supplements.”
Conyers is a patient at NorthShore, where researchers are working under the direction of a principal investigator based at Michigan State University‘s College of Nursing.
At least 339 patients with advanced forms of breast cancer are participating in the study and have been assigned to one of three groups. One group is treated with authentic reflexology techniques; the second receives placebo foot massages; and the third is offered no form of the therapy.
All continue to receive conventional chemotherapy treatment for stage III and IV breast cancer.
Each participant completes in-depth questionnaires before and after each reflexology session, to determine the impact on quality of life.
Conyers, who completed her sessions last March, was informed afterward that she had received professional reflexology.
“My belief is that this, combined with my other therapy, my chemo, has made a difference,” said Conyers, who said she felt more balanced and felt less pain for about six weeks after each session.
She was initially diagnosed with breast cancer 12 years ago, leading to radiation therapy and a mastectomy. She thought she was in the clear for more than a decade until she awakened one day late in 2007 with severe back pain.
“It found me again,” said Conyers, who has endured chemotherapy for 14 months. “Cancer, I found, is a bit of a coward. It sneaks up on you.”
Since her role in the study ended, she began making her own appointments with trained reflexologists, who use thumb and finger pressure technique on the feet, hands and outer ears to relieve stress.
Sarah Preusker, a practitioner who is providing reflexology or placebo massages in the study, said that the treatments lower anxiety.
“There are thousands of nerves that are stimulated,” she said. “The body is an amazing thing, and it will always strive to achieve homeostasis or balance. Due to stress, it is not always able to do that. By pressing the feet and improving circulation, we are assisting the body in healing itself.”
Should reflexology prove an effective treatment alongside conventional medicine, physicians may consider using it more routinely, Victorson said.
“Research is really where you can start to change minds and open attitudes,” he said.
